Many novice writers mistakenly believe that they should use a variety of terms for the same concept in order to sound more sophisticated, Beware! This is dangerous! Be consistent with the terms you use, so that the reader can see a clear connection between sentences.

NEGATIVE EXAMPLE:

The feature extractor distinguishes acoustic properties central to melody perception. These features are then interpreted with the probabilistic model producing a note sequence.

In the second sentence above, it is not clear that the writer is using the word "features" as a new way of expressing the notion of "acoustic properties", part of the comment of sentence 1. In fact, "features" seems to have a closer link with the topic of sentence 1, "the feature extractor".
