Recognising topicalising phrases

Purpose: The following exercise helps you to make sure that you can recognise 'topicalising phrases', which can improve the flow and coherence of your texts by providing topical links between sentences.

Remember, a topicalising phrase is a prepositional phrase at the beginning of the sentence which contains 'old' or 'given' information. Examples include

In an earlier study,...
In comparison with [GIVEN],...
To analyse this problem,...
In addition to [GIVEN],...
In each case,...
