THE "GIVEN-NEW" PRINCIPLE
Purpose: This exercise aims to allow you to explore a text and to check your assumptions
of which information is 'given' and 'new' in the sample text.
Click on the sentences of the paragraph shown in the text to see how the authors have used given and new concepts to link the flow of the text.
As you will notice, given concepts come before new information to give the reader a frame of reference with which to process the new details.
