THE COLON [ : ]

Colons can be used to connect sentences in four ways:

1. After an 'independent clause' to introduce a list, including bulleted lists;
2. Between 'independent clauses' if the second summarizes, explains or amplifies the first;
3. To introduce an appositive;
4. After an 'independent clause' to introduce a quotation.
