Practise punctuating relative clauses
Exercise 3: Essential and Non-essential Information
Instructions: In the next exercise, you are presented with unpunctuated sentences
that contain either an essential or non-essential relative clause. Your task is to make three decisions:
- is the relative clause 'essential' (no comma) or 'non-essential' (needs a comma),
- does it need one or two commas, and
- where should you put the commas.
Your task is to find and insert commas into the correct places. To insert a comma, click between the words where you think a comma should go. The exercise will respond by giving you feedback concerning your selection. An incorrect answer will make the selected location red, while a correct decision will highlight the correct position in yellow.
