Exercises: 1 / 1

Topicalizing the subject

Purpose: This exercise gives you practice in extracting the topic from prepositional phrases and then placing it into subject position.

Instructions: In this exercise, you will be presented with two sentences. The first sentence is a typical top-heavy sentence (i.e., it ends the with a verb): the topic has been hidden in a prepositional phrase and the verb has been forgotten at the end of the sentence. Your task is to change the sentence, so that the verb comes early in the sentence and the correct information is placed into subject position. Press the "CHECK" button to receive feedback on your choice. If you get 'stuck', you can always use the "hint" button to request a letter. However, note that one point will be deducted for each hint!

Remember that you can also click on the icon in the left-hand corner at any time during the exercise to send an automated email message with comments, questions or problems to your teacher.

Estimated time: 25 minutes.
