COMMON PROBLEMS

Both native and non-native language users have problems with writing. However, the problems differ. Researchers have found that non-native writers tend to have difficulties with topic choice and topical progression when they write in English. We shall look at four types of problems that are particularly relevant to Finnish writers.

Problem 1: If you fail to provide a consistent topic, readers will have difficulty in seeing what your text is about.

Problem 2: Readers may not follow the logic between your sentences if you don't use the expected patterns of topical progression.

Problem 3: Careless use of synonyms to refer to the same concept can lead to confusion.

Problem 4: Problems with topical choice and topical progression may cost you money and the chance to get published.
